The Rider by PinkParasol The Rider by PinkParasol
A battle scene.

In retrospect, this was a very hard image for me to paint. Not only was it a unfamiliar subject matter, but it was also tricky medium to do an illustration in. I think next time I will have to work much bigger to get the details to show up more clearly. This image could have used a lot more work, but after awhile, I just couldn't look at it anymore!

i really like the technique of how u rendered the musculature. it looks like u did it blocked in with darks and went in and highlighted it and such. great work as always, and congrats on ur contest entry !

Hi Annie,

This is an excellent piece, so this isn't meant a criticism, but there is one detail here that may or may not apply since I cannot place the image historically, but the stirrups look out of place. If I knew the actual setting I could answer this. Of course, if it's fantasy, I guess it doesn't matter. :)

Hi Al!

Thank you for letting me know. Since its just a fantasy piece, I didn't have a particular time period in mind. I will have to remember that when I revise this image!

If it matters to you, the stirrup made it's way into Europe by the 8th century.

I like the tutorial as well, show how it changed as you worked on it.

Splendid!Splendid!Splendid!

I love how everything in the painting just goes so together to make it a dramatic battle scene!

I kind of feel sorry for the the men without horses though they seem to be losing quite harshly... =(

It's got a "classic" painting feel to it, like something out of the Renaissance era (something about the posing, I think). Nicely detailed; the background and the horse look especially great!
