In Greek mythology, the river that divided the mortal world with the underworld was called the River Styx.  The goddess of this river, who shares the same name, was a daughter of Oceanus. She both represents and controls hatred. In the Titan wars she chose to be an alley of Zeus, and was rewarded with a palace in the Underworld.
